Direct Quotes, Paraphrasing and Weaving Evidence

Direct Quote: A direct quote repeats verbatim what was said by the source and uses quotations marks to signify that exact words are being referenced.

EXAMPLE: According to CNN journalist, Jake Tapor, “For every 1 female protagonist in video games, there are 27 male protagonists.”

Paraphrasing: Paraphrasing allows the author of the paper to express a quote in their own words, often times to make the evidence more digestible for their reader. Paraphrasing does not use quotation marks as the source's words are not being referenced verbatim. However, paraphrased Evidence still requires citations and introductions.

EXAMPLE: Jake Tapor, CNN journalist, found that male characters and protagonists grossly outnumber female characters and protagonists by a ratio of 27 to 1 in video games.

Weaving: Weaving utilizes both strategies and allows the author to paraphrase a quote while still sprinkling in bits and pieces of the quote itself. This strategy is used to make evidence easier to understand but ensures that the integrity of the original quote remains intact, and in turn, the authors.

EXAMPLE: Jake Tapor, a CNN journalist says that there are an abundance of male characters for “every 1 female protagonist” in video games today.
