Gender roles in the United States have largely been reinforced by the media often through the use of commercials and advertisements. Roy Brodrick, author of “Why We Do What We Do” addresses how these gender roles have been pushed upon us since we were young. He states, “Media companies spend millions of dollars to target children and young adults in hopes of keeping adult men and women contained in their respective boxes.” This quote illustrates how gender roles are not natural and instead a deliberate attempt to keep citizens conformed. Aside from being perpetrated by the media, gender roles are also largely reinforced by the music industry.
